David Raises Up

Samuel 17 – 16:31

Verse 16 says for 40 days the Philistine came forward every morning and evening and took his stand.

So for 40 days Goliath taunting the Israelites and nothing happens.

Did you know that 40 is the number of probation or trial? So God used Goliath to taunt Israel for 40 day.

While that was going on, in verses 17-19 Jesse tells David to go to the front line with bread, cheese and grain for his brothers and the commander of their unit. Maybe this wasn’t an odd thing to do back then, but was it by chance that this would put David within ear shot of Goliath at the exact time he would make his challenge, verse 23?

What are the odds that David would meet his brothers at just the right time? That his brothers would be in just the right location? This is a perfect example of Gods divine plan coming to light. We can also see these things in our day to day life if we just keep our eyes open.

In verse 28 David’s brother Eliab heard David talking about Goliath and became angry. I suspect there were maybe some hard feeling because of David’s anointing, but on top of that I think David’s brothers knew he was a Get-r-Done kind of guy. With him around they would not receive any of the glory of battle. David’s brothers became to discourage David’s inquiries and yet he was persistant enough to make it all the way to Saul.
