And this be our motto: ‘In God is our trust.’

March 10, 2008 at 3:41 am (Faith, God, National Anthem, Star Spangled Banner)

So lately I have been stuck on our national anthem, The Star Spangled Banner. The words, the beauty of the music, the Power behind the song, every time I hear it I am moved. With that said, it’s become my new project song while I learn to play guitar.

So tonight I was thinking about the lyrics to the song and I just wasn’t sure I knew all the words by heart, so I turned to Google, and from there was directed to Wikipedia. I was surprised to learn that there are actually 4 verses in our National Anthem. I was able to read each one, and found that I was especially touched by the fourth and least sung verse of the song. I want to share that here.

O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: ‘In God is our trust.’
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
